Sermon Outline Prepared by Dr. Joseph P. Metoyer, Jr., Pastor/Teacher April 29, 2001 Text: Numbers 32:13 Subject: “Life
Is A-Mazing” Introduction: Life
is no straight and easy corridor along which we travel free and unhampered, but
a maze of passages, through which we must seek our way, lost and confused, now
and again checked in a blind alley. But
always, if we have faith, a door will open for us, not perhaps one that we
ourselves would ever have thought of, but one that will ultimately prove good
for us.”[1]
I. “He made them wander”God made them wander. This Hebrew word for “made” has the thought of “wholly reaping”. The word “wander” presents the thought of one being as a “fugitive”. (Amos 8:11-12) illustrates this thought: “Behold the days are coming says the Lord God, that I will send a famine on the land, not a famine of bread, not a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord. They shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north to east; they shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the Lord, but shall not find it”. A. “Fugitive” is an individual fleeing. B. The place of the fleeing is the “wilderness”. II. “In
the wilderness” The theological development of a wilderness theme presents the “wilderness”, as a naked place, a desert, a place that is destitute of everything and in order to survive in the wilderness one would needs Divine intervention. This is true to form in this wilderness theme of Exodus, Numbers and other Biblical writings. Yahweh is repeatedly portrayed as providing for Israel’s needs in the desert in most dramatic ways: These include guidance by the pillar of cloud and fire, and the movement of the ark, as well as the provisions of food and drink. Have you ever felt that you were wandering in the
wilderness? People wander when they don’t want to face the reality that life changes all the time. God speaks in (Amos 6:1) “Woe to you who are at ease in Zion”. Always be ready for change, don’t get comfortable: In relationships, on your job, in school nor in your career. Never accept the status quo. Application: Let
me tell you the story about a little book I read, “Who Moved My Cheese?” If we don’t accept the fact that God has blessed us and wants us to do something with His Word in our Church, He could cause us to wander. Wandering is “wholly reaping as a fugitive”. God could cause us to “wander” in a place where His Word could be hard to find. We need His Word. Let’s stop “Hemming and Hawing”; Let’s start Sniffing and Scurrying! Let’s get to work for the Lord! |
