Text:  Romans 2:6-10

Subject:  Seeking God’s Glory!

Introduction:  In the old Westminster catechism the first question asks:  What is the chief end of man?  And the answer is; Man’s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.

I.                   Seeking God’s Glory (Vv. 6-7)

A.     God (v.6) will render to each one according to his deeds (v.7).  The summary of verse six is discussed in (Vv. 7-10) and confirmed in (v.11).  The language is clear that God’s judgment upon each individual will be according to man’s deeds or works and that judgment is not present but at some time in the future.  (Hosea 12:2) The Lord also brings a charge against Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his deeds.  Jesus reaffirms this in His statement in (Matthew 16:27) For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angles, and then He will reward each according to his works.

B.     Paul is speaking of two kinds of men:  One by  “Patient continuance” seeks, (v.7) zhtousin; (actively and in continuance seeks) glory, honor and incorruption; not a man who deserves these characteristics.  “Patient continuance” means “by steadfast perseverance in good works”.  Some “think the reference is to goodness of life, not however as meriting God’s favor but as the expression of faith.”[1]    A man seeking something eternal by faith.  Jesus said, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened (Luke 11:9).

1.      Eternal life (v. 7) to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek… Paul is not saying that these people need to seek eternal life; (1:7) they already have eternal life.  Paul is not teaching salvation by works.  He is teaching that true Christians obey God and there are people who refuse to submit to Him.  The glory that Christians are to seek for is the glory of God.

a.       Ask yourself, does it give God glory for me to…  That is what Paul id dealing with; the lifestyle of the Believer.  Christians will be judged based upon our pursuit of holiness.

b.      Ask yourself another question, does it give glory to self to do this…                                         While verses 6 and 7 describe the Believer verses 8and 9 describes the non-Christian.

2.      But to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth…indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish (Vv. 8-9). They may be divided into evil un-believers and just un-believers but the result is the same.  They shall come into the condemnation of God’s just-wrath that shall be exercised according to truth and righteousness against those who know Him not, and who obey not the gospel of His Son (II Thess. 1:8).

II.                Seeking and Finding (v. 10)

A.     (Matthew 6: 33) Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.  In (Luke 11:9) Jesus says, Ask and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.   There two different rewards given out:

1.      For the one not “seeking good” (Vv. 8-9)…

2.      For the one “seeking good” (v.10)…

There is “death” for the one not “seeking good” and “eternal life” for the one “seeking good”.  The bottom line is that truth divides.  There are two places where God’s judgment will be given out and the places are different:  (Ii Cor. 5:10) When Paul wrote the Corinthian believers that we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ he used an entirely different word to describe it.  He did not call it the throne, thronos, but the bench, bema.  Only believers will appear before the judgment seat of Christ. The basis of that judgment has to do with rewards for the manner of life after one has been born again.

Jesus said (John 5:44) Seek the honor that comes from the only God.

In verse 7 the believer seeks “glory, honor, and incorruption.  In verse 10 the reward announced is that he receives glory, honor and peace.  The rewards in verse 10 are not the same as what the believer seeks in verse 7.  The glory the believer seeks is the glory of God.  Jesus at the bema will reward the believer with (John 17:22) The glory which thou gavest me I have given to them.  The honor the believer seeks is not honor for himself.  This honor is “the honor that comes from God only”.  (Rev. 3:21) To him that overcometh, Christ says, will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also covecame and am set down on my Father’s throne.  Finally with the incorruption the believer seeks he will receive peace.  On that day of judgment the believer will have already entered into His presence and that is peace.

Application:  In (Verse. 11) The Apostle Paul confirms what has been stated in (Vv. 6-10).

Order my steps in your Word, Dear Lord.  Lead me, guide me, every day… Send your anointing, Father I pray.  Order my steps in your Word.  Please order my steps in your Word.

Verse: Humbly I ask thee, teach me your will, while you are working, help me be still.  Though Satan is busy, God is real!  Order my steps in your Word, Please order my steps in your Word.

Bridle my tongue, let my words edify, let the words of my mouth be acceptable in thy sight.  Take charge of my thoughts, both day and night.  Please order my steps in your Word.

2nd Chorus:  I want to worthy, My calling to fulfill.  Please order my steps Lord, and I’ll do your blessed will.  The world is ever changing, but you are still the same.  If you order my steps…I’ll praise your Name.

Special: Order my steps…. in your Word  Order my tongue…. in your Word  Guide my feet…in your Word  Wash my heart…in your Word  Show me how to walk…in your Word  Show me how to talk…in your Word

When I need a brand new song to sing  Show me how to let your praises ring…in your Word, in your Word  Please order my steps…. in your Word.  Repeat…….
