Text:  Romans 10:1-13

Subject:  What Must I Do To Be Saved?

Introduction:  Salvation is absolutely free.  So is joining the army.  You don’t have to buy your way in.  Everything you will need is provided.  But there is a sense in which following Christ – like joining the army – will cost you dearly.  It can cost freedom, family, friends, autonomy, and possibly even your life.  The job of the evangelist – like that of the recruiter – is to tell potential inductees the full story.  That is exactly why Jesus’ message was often so full of hard demands:[1]

I.                   Trust Him as Lord and Savior (10:9)

Paul expresses the problem the Jews were having in (10:2-3).  Look at the word, righteousness.  The Jews wanted righteousness but tried to obtain it in the wrong way.  Like the Pharisees described in Matthew 23:15, the Jews expended energy in securing a right standing with God, but their deeds were done in ignorance.  “Religious people” today are no different; they think that God will accept them for their good works. “ They have a zeal for God but not according to knowledge” (v.2.).

A.    The Bible speaks of two kinds of righteousness:  works righteousness, which comes from obeying law; and faith righteousness, which is the gift of God to those who trust His Son.[2]

B.     The problem the Jews created for themselves out of their own eagerness was that they would not submit to faith righteousness; their racial and religious pride turned them from simple faith to blind religion.  They rejected Christ and clung to the Law, not realizing that Christ was the very one for whom the Law had been preparing the way, and that He Himself had ended on the cross the reign of the Law.  The Mosaic Law is no longer God’s basis for dealing with mankind; He deals with us at the cross, where Christ died for the world.[3] (Romans 10:3-4)…

1. Righteousness by the Law is described in (Leviticus 18:5); you shall therefore keep My statues and My judgments, which if a man does, he shall live by them:  I am the Lord.

2. Righteousness by faith is described in (Deuteronomy 30:12-14)… And that is exactly what Paul is quoting as he teach them that they do not have to go across the sea nor do they need to send anyone to heaven to get the Word of God, it was on their lips and in their hearts. (Romans 10:8)…

3. Listen to these Jews and to your friends:  We have worked hard and we have done good and yes we have put forth our best effort and you say that we still have not done enough to earn heaven.  What must I do to be saved?

a.       You must trust Him as Lord and Savior (Romans 10:9).  Salvation comes when sinners confess that Jesus is Lord and believe in their hearts that Christ is alive from the dead.  What is believed in the heart is confessed openly with the mouth.[4]

II.   Confess Him as Lord (10:10)

Some of the Jews in Jesus’ day would not openly confess Him (John 12:42-43) Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the Synagogue; for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

A.     The beginning of life for the Believer is confession of Jesus as Lord (Romans 10:9-10)…

B.      Paul again quotes (Isa. 28:16) in (Romans 10:11) “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”  The Jews did not like that word “whoever” they thought that they were the only chosen people.  But in (v.13) Paul quotes (Joel 2:32) “For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved”.

Application:  We cannot say that we are saved if Jesus is not the Lord of our life.  Jesus becoming Lord of our life is not a second work or a later work of salvation but He calls us to confess Him as Lord.

Jesus is Lord, and those who refuse Him, as Lord cannot use Him as Savior.  Everyone who receives His must surrender to His authority, for to say we receive Christ when in fact we reject His right to reign over us is utter absurdity.  It is a futile attempt to hold onto sin with one hand and take Jesus with the other.  What kind of salvation is it if we are left in bondage to sin?

Salvation is not a reality until one surrenders all to Him.  When we confess Jesus as Lord we are saying that we submit to His authority and no salvation is genuine without His Lordship.

We cannot make Him Lord; He is Lord!  When HE rose from the grave He declared He had all power in heaven and in earth and that makes Him Lord.

What must I do to be saved?  I must trust Him by faith and I must confess Him as Lord!

The songwriter declares:  “He is Lord, He is Lord!  He has risen from the dead and He is Lord!  Every knee shall bow, every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Lord.

Another Songwriter says:  “When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word, What a glory He sheds on our way!  While we do His good will he abides with us still, and with all who trust and obey.

Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, But to trust and obey.
